"Herman Cain understands the real and present danger that the spread of radical Islam poses to our way of life. Herman Cain hasn’t been shy about speaking out about the need to confront and stop the spread of radical Islam – a barbaric ideology that brutalizes women, religious minorities and gays. For the gay left none of this will matter. All that matters is the group hug.
"For the gay left, it isn’t important whether the policies pursued by a candidate or a party actually improve the lives of gay people, all that matters is that they get the pat on the head – the assurance that they are ok. I don’t need the group hug, nor do I need affirmation from the government that I am ok. What I need is a President and a Congress that will pursue policies that will make life better for me and my family." - GOProud chairman Chris Barron, sticking by his man, even though he thinks Barron is a sinner bound for an eternity in a lake of fire.

In a blistering essay which name-checks right wing gays Roy Cohn and Ken Mehlman, today Michelangelo Signorile posts an Advocate column ripping GOProud and its chairman, Chris Barron. An excerpt:
[D]enialists and elitists who believe they are superior to other gays — even if the attitude masks a pitiful self-loathing — are clearly as prevalent as ever in the LGBT movement, except that they can now be out of the closet. Perversely, the fact that we can find such people in GOProud is a measure of our success. The other thing we’ve learned is that the Christian right, contrary to all the media blather about it losing steam as the Tea Party ascends, still has a grip on the GOP, and this can actually be helpful in gaining civil rights through the Democratic Party—if the Democrats recognize a useful wedge issue staring them in the face. GOProud’s Chris Barron fits right in, often appearing desperate for Republican acceptance, compromising his positions at a moment’s notice—if he even had any to begin with. Formerly political director for the Log Cabin Republicans, he broke away and cofounded GOProud, claiming that Log Cabin wasn’t conservative enough. Since its founding in 2009, GOProud slowly moved in the direction of not taking any pro-gay positions, all in an attempt to be included in the Republican Party, even though Barron oddly once tweeted that GOProud is “a gay organization, we only work on gay issues.”

Barron is bent out of shape because I tagged my anti-GOProud tweet with #kapos. Kapos, of course, were not Nazis, but don't expect hypocrites like Chris "Gay Left = American Taliban" Barron to grok such a distinction.

Homocons and wingnuts are amusing themselves today by tweeting all the ways they're going to hurt the environment in observance of pinko communist Earth Day.

UPDATE: From Barron's personal blog.
Instead of focusing on the words of an NBA player or Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter, why doesn’t the Human Rights Campaign and the rest of the gay left stand up to the brutality of radicalized Islam? The truth is that they won’t because it doesn’t fit their ultra-liberal world view. The gay left wants to demonize any Christian in America who might not support gay marriage, they want gay people in America to believe that the greatest threat we face is from Christianity, that couldn’t be any further from the truth. Indeed it is the Judeo-Christian western world that is the only thing that stands between gay people and genocide at the hands of radical Islamic barbarians.

"A group of gay lefty organizations who CLAIM they exist to work on behalf of gay people actually put out a press release on Friday attacking Rep. Peter King’s hearings on Islamic radicalization. Nevermind that radical Islam teaches that the penalty for being gay is DEATH. Honestly, the Onion couldn’t have written this release. Signing on to this attack on the King hearings, a de facto defense of radical Islam, included the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality California (who might as well just become the Communist Party of CA) and Lambda Legal. I guess all the work of fighting FOR gay people is done so these lefties can now spend time defending the barbarism of radicalized Islam." - GOProud head Chris Barron, writing on his personal blog.
From the above-referenced press release:
LGBT Americans are no stranger to this type of scapegoating. In the 1950s, Joe McCarthy targeted LGBT people, and sought to portray them as dangerous and un-American. In a report titled "Employment of Homosexuals and Other Sex Perverts in the U.S. Government," a group of United States Senators concluded that "homosexuals and other sex perverts are not proper persons to be employed in Government" because "they are generally unsuitable, and they constitute security risks." Those hearings—like the "Muslim Radicalization" hearings—heard testimony from supposed experts that reinforced these prejudices. In the years that followed, thousands of LGBT civil service employees were harassed, terrorized, or fired from their jobs. [snip]
Added Lambda Legal Executive Director Kevin Cathcart: "Every American, regardless of ethnicity, religious belief or sexual orientation, should be asking 'where does this lead?' We've all been down this road before, most notably during World War Two and the Cold War, with tragic consequences for tens of thousands of American citizens. Singling any group out as a whole because of a suspected lack of loyalty on the part of a few of its members is wrong; doing it when the internment of Japanese-Americans and the spectacle of the McCarthy witch trials are still within living memory is simply repugnant."

"Considering we don’t support gay marriage and DADT isn’t part of our 2011 legislative agenda, I'm not sure how this effects us at all." - Chris Barron, telling Red State that GOProud will have no problem adhering to new CPAC rules which stipulate that any organization supporting LGBT rights may not attend in the future.
A Red State commenter observes: "GOProud has recently scrubbed their website of all material referring to the repeal of DADT and their support for gay marriage." He adds that an old press release celebrating the repeal of DADT does remain on the site at the moment.
UPDATE: A reader directs us to this clip of Barron's own March 2010 wedding in DC, which he apparently doesn't support.

I'll be on Michelangelo Signorile's SiriusXM show today around 4:30PM to talk about GOProud and the CPAC "bigot" controversy. You can stream the show online for free if you sign up for a temporary trial.

SiriusXM host Michelangelo Signorile has posted an audio clip of today's on-air meltdown by GOProud chairman Chris Barron. Signorile writes:
Barron has come on the show several times in he past. My program was among the first media outlets to give his group any attention when it first broke off from the Log Cabin Republicans. We've had a spirited but respectful discussion, as we disagree on just about everything. He seemed to revel in it, enjoying the back and forth, and certainly was not as angry and defensive as he is in this interview.Listen to the full (and brief) interview.
Not only did GoProud always come on the show when asked -- either Jimmy LaSalvia or Barron would come on -- but they reached out to my producer to come on the show at other times when we did not ask and we declined, as it wasn't the best time or was not about something we were interested in. I say that because Barron outright lied in this interview, claiming that he often doesn't come on my show (implying I asked and he declined), supposedly because of the way I treat him. That's when I ended the interview. I'm not going to put up with a liar who had clearly become flustered because he was caught in a contradiction so now was changing the subject.

World Net Daily reports that the board of directors of the governing organization of CPAC has voted to exclude GOProud (and any other "homosexual advocacy" group) from next year's convention. This move comes after GOProud chairman Chris Barron came under fire for referring to some conservative leaders as "bigots." Which they are, of course, but Barron had violated Reagan's Eleventh Commandment: "Never speak ill of another Republican." Barron later apologized, but the damage, apparently, had been done. Details of today's vote by the American Conservative Union have not been released.
UPDATE: Twitter is presently going nuts about the meltdown Barron just had on the Michelangelo Signorile show when he refused to also apologize for calling LGBT activists "the gay left Taliban." Apologies for bigots, yes, but not for gays. Signorile then booted him off the show. Hopefully we'll get an audio file on that very soon.

Today openly lesbian right-wing radio host Tammy Bruce announced her resignation from GOProud's board of directors. This move comes after widespread wingnut condemnation of GOProud chairman Chris Barron for calling high-profile anti-gay activist Cleta Mitchell a "bigot" in an interview with Metro Weekly. From Bruce's website:
I want to let you know that after being a supporter and serving as Chair of the Advisory Board since May of 2010, I gave Chris Barron and Jimmy LaSalvia my resignation Saturday night. If you search GOProud here at the blog you’ll see the affection with which I’ve held both Chris and Jimmy, and I wish them well. As Independent Conservatives and Tea Party patriots, we have a lot of work to do in the next two years taking our great nation back, and I do look forward to continuing to work with conservatives across the spectrum on the issues with which we all have in common.Barron's comments will also likely mean that GOProud will not be allowed to attend CPAC 2012, as the newly named head of the convention has taken particular offense.
The new chair of the American Conservative Union, Al Cardenas, today distanced his organization from GOProud, telling FrumForum in an exclusive interview that “it’s going to be difficult to continue the relationship” with the gay conservative organization. Cardenas, who was selected yesterday to replace outgoing chairman David Keene, told FrumForum that he disapproved of GOProud’s response to the furor. “I have been disappointed with their website and their quotes in the media, taunting organizations that are respected in our movement and part of our movement, and that’s not acceptable. And that puts them in a difficult light in terms of how I view things,” said Cardenas.Today's lesson: If you call a bigot a bigot, you don't get to play with bigots. Seems fair enough.

"For the past six months, we have watched as unfair and untrue attacks have been leveled against our organization, our allies, our friends and sometimes even their families. Everyone has their breaking point and clearly in my interview with Metro Weekly I had reached mine. I shouldn’t have used the language that I did to describe Cleta Mitchell and for that I apologize." - GOProud head Chris Barron, apologizing for calling Mitchell a "bigot."
Michell is the virulently anti-gay DC-based attorney largely behind the campaign to boycott CPAC over GOProud's attendance. Earlier this week, Pam Spaulding noted that Mitchell's hatred for gay people is probably due to the fact that her husband left her for another man over 20 years ago.
RELATED: Mitchell was one of the attorneys backing the infamous Citizens United case which allows corporations to make unlimited donations to political campaigns.

The Metro Weekly cover story on GOProud and the CPAC boycott has been posted online. Reporter Chris Geidner does a great job delving into the philosophy of GOProud and who their allies and enemies are. You should read the entire piece, but naturally I'll excerpt a bit with a quote from me in it.
''The problem is that the gay left has decided what qualifies as pro-gay and what qualifies as anti-gay, and a whole bunch of the stuff that they think qualifies as pro-gay, I don't think has anything to do with being pro-gay,'' says Barron. "And, a whole bunch of stuff that they think is anti-gay, I don't think is anti-gay at all." Barron sees his mission as changing that. ''I think that, over time, obviously, people's position on gay issues is evolving, and I think it helps to have a gay voice out there that says, 'You don't have to be with them on all the things they say you have to be with them on.'''Read the rest.
Saying that's ''one of the things that drives the left crazy,'' Barron becomes angered when describing the complaint that GOProud is ''providing cover to our enemies,'' as gay left blogger Joe Jervis (Joe. My. God.) – a near-constant critic of GOProud – puts it. Barron isn't having it. ''No, we're not giving cover to bigots," he argues. "What we're doing is separating the people who don't agree with the left-wing agenda from the real bigots. You can be against ENDA and hate crimes and federal safe schools legislation and not be a bigot. If you're Tony Perkins, you're a bigot. You're against all of that stuff not because of any federalist reasons, but actually because you're just a nasty, anti-gay bigot.'' Jervis defends his tactics against GOProud, saying, ''What they're actively advocating is blockage of some pretty critical LGBT rights that the movement has only begun to scratch the surface of.''
